Abstract:

Improving Design Decisions in Engineering and Applied Systems: The Case of Medical Devices 

 Medical device development (MDD) is complex, with impact on different stakeholders and covering a wide range of technologies, intended uses and context of uses. Regulations along with the wide taxonomy of “users” provide additional levels of complexity for new designers entering this field. To address this and some of the challenges of MDD, I?DEAS (“Improving Design Decisions in Engineering and Applied Systems”) research group studies (1) the development of decision support system (DSS) in the form of web-based collaborative platform to implement the MDD process, (2) the identification of critical factors in MDD obtained from the analyses of FDA approved orthopedic devices, (3the assessment of medical device design complexity from a multi-metric approach(4) the evaluation of the neuroestimulator as a solution to Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and (5) user-centered design approaches focusing on aesthetics and developing countriesIn this presentation special focus is providedto the development of the DSS, which included three revisions of a standard product design process model and a validation procedure. The conversion of this work into a web-based collaborative platform advancedthe process model to a new level of depth by transitioning from visual to executable. The tool is intended to motivate new ventures to emerge from an academic settingAligned with this goal, a complete MDD experience is provided in the courses ININ 5105 – Introduction to Medical Device Design Methods to be offered in Spring 2015.

Bio:

Dr. Lourdes A. Medina earned her B.S. in Industrial Engineering in 2006 from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and obtained the highest recognitions in the graduation commencements: Luis Stefani Rafucci Award, College of Engineering Award and Frederick M. Taylor Industrial Engineering Award. In 2007, she was admitted at The Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, where she received her M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering in 2009 and Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering in 2012. While at The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Medina is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez in the Department of Industrial Engineering. She teaches courses in Medical Device Development, Automation Processes, Project Management and Linear Programming; and is conducting research in the areas of Systems and Product Design Methods, Medical Devices, Regulations, Complexity Assessment, Decision Support Systems, Manufacturing, Automation, Real-Time Process Control and Engineering Education. Dr. Medina is the I?DEAS (Improving Design Decisions in Engineering and Applied Systems) Research Group Leader. The group is interdisciplinary in nature, with students from various engineering fields: Industrial, Mechanical, Computer and Electrical Engineering. I?DEAS objective is to innovate the development process of products and systems with recent contributions in two domains: medical devices and process automation. Dr. Medina is also the creator and director of the Real Time Process Control Summer Camp (RealTimePCfrom the Department of Industrial EngineeringDr. Medina has been the recipient of several fellowships such as the GEM Ph.D. Engineering Fellowship, NASA Harriet Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship, Alfred P. Sloan Dissertation Fellowship, Graham Endowed Fellowship, Marie Underhill Noll Graduate Fellowship, and General Electric Fellowship, while also becoming a scholar of the Center for Integrated Health Delivery Systems at Penn State. She is member of Alpha Pi Mu Industrial Engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi Engineering honor society, and Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). Currently, she holds the positions as Secretary of the Manufacturing and Design Division of IIE, and track chair of the Manufacturing and Engineering DesignTrack for 2016 Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference (ISERC). She is also a member of multiple committees with leadership roles: Automation and Information Systems Course Committee (President), Automation Laboratory Coordinator and a member of the Bio-engineering Graduate Committee.
